Join the Parade!

While putting together the Adorable Progeny's deluxe suite (presently referred to as the Nerdery), and I keep coming across the information that young infants can most easily see high contrast black and white imagery. There's some very nice stuff available for purchase, but, hey, I've got a bottle of ink! Why not make my own?

Here's what I'm thinking: I'll post my drawings at pretty high resolution (600 dpi). Any parent who would like to use these for their infant is welcome to. They remain my intellectual property, and are not available for other use without contacting me (this includes schools and garage bands), but parents can do all kinds of things with them: make flashcards, wall art, tattoos, whatever.

And, in my very first attempt at memecraft, I'd like for other folks to add to the parade. The parameters are:
1.) You are willing to offer the same terms that I have. You retain all rights, but parents can use the images for their kids.
2.) High contrast black and white imagery, at a pretty decent resolution. No grays, no gradients, no colors. Well, maybe red.
3.) Content should be all-ages appropriate. Dahr.
4.) It's a musical parade! Give your marcher an instrument!

No deadline. We'll keep on marching for as long as people are interested in joining in. Drop your link in the comments of any Parade post, or shoot me an email!

Spoiler Alert!

Well, Young Mr. Trippe is up to his meme-jinks, once again. This time, it's Stephanie Brown, aka "Spoiler," aka "The girl Robin who got killed real fast and then ignored."

I've never been a particular fan of Robin, but I did buy the three issues or so when Stephanie wore the red-breast. A girl Robin caught my imagination, and seemed like a interesting pants-kick to the Batman-plus-one dynamic. It quickly became apparent that the writer was only pursuing this storyline because of editorial mandate, and that said mandate ended with Stephanie getting hers. Feh.

Anyway, Dean himself has drawn a very nice take on the character.
Jemma Salume, Joel Carroll, and Ming Doyle all have great ones, too. And many more to come, I'll warrant.

I'm not sure why I drew my Stephanie in the company of Hal Jordan and Metamorpho. But I'm glad Metamorpho is in the lead. That cat looks like he's got a plan.

Gunther Girlhead

Spring is in full bloom down here in Memphis, and Gunther is enjoying it as much as anybody. Who's going to stop him?

Hey, blog traffic has been through the roof for the past few days, thanks to a Boing Boing post on the Supergirl meme. So, if'n you're new to these parts, Welcome! Please take a moment to browse our many non-Supergirl images, as well.

Defending the Skort

Project: Rooftop and Girlwonder have teamed up to review some of the redesigns to come out of the ongoing Supergirl meme. It's a roundtable-style discussion, and, as the week progresses, you may notice a certain Simon/Paula vibe develop between Vito Delsante and myself. I can only imagine that I'm Paula.

Supergirl Studies

Well, the Supergirl meme is bringing in a lot of new traffic to the blog, so, I thought I'd double-dip and present some of the sketches I made on my way to the design I eventually chose. Most of these were drawn during airplane rides to and from Toronto.

1 I was trying to go for a dancer's look with this costume, but it's way too... um, skintight.

2 Too Fifties cheerleader, right?

3 My attempt at the skirt-and-tights solution that a lot of other people have worked with more successfully. Also, Streaky and the Kryptonian bracelet make their appearance.

4 An attempt at more of a schoolgirl approach. I like this design, but I thought it entailed too much revision of the Supergirl concept.
On the facing page, you can see the first thoughts towards the costume I eventually went with.

5 is a little more of the ganglier, fourteen-year-old schoolgirl Supergirl.

And 6 is the costume I took to finish.

The Maid of Might!

Remember the Batgirl Meme? That was some kooky Internet fun. Several superhero art memes have cropped up in the past year, but none quite captured the magic of the that first spontaneous eruption of Internet creativity. Now, there's a Supergirl meme in the offing, and it carries a certain urgency, due to the fact that the official version of Supergirl running around in the funny books is an unmitigated, mysogynistic trainwreck.

So here's my attempt at a Supergirl who is fun, sporty, and, uhm, a girl. Some specifics:
1. She is, of course, accompanied by Streaky the Quantum Cat, a higher-dimensional life-form whose location and velocity cannot both be known.
2. The costume incorporates culottes, so as to avoid any of the upskirt issues that plague other flying women.
3. She's sporting a bit of Kryptonian crystal tech in the form of a bracelet. I'm not too sure what it does, but I suppose it should act as a Super version of whatever personal technology is big with the teens at any given moment.

Bat Flu

I'm a little late jumping on the Batgirl meme that spread itself all over the internet this weekend. Still, here's my Pulp Adventure Batgirl.

I drew this while eating key lime pie for breakfast with my sweetie.

Update, 1/21/06: Almost a week later, and we're still getting hits from the Batgirl list. I can't believe anybody has the patience to scroll down that far! Anyway, I just wanted to invite those who are linking directly to this post to take a look around the rest of the blog. After all, this Batgirl meme has to end sooner or later, and then... the Whaling meme will take over! Avast!
