Jellyfish

I decided, back at the beginning of the semester, to draw an animal everyday. This lasted all of three days. This is the third one.

Jellyfish, jellyfish, jellyfish... do I have any interesting stories or associations with jellyfish? Uhm... I ate one once. Bought it in Chinatown, and took it as a gift to my brother in Maine. We dumped it in some soup. It pretty much dissolved and slightly thickened the broth. No particular flavor to report.

I used to wondered where jellyfish ranked on the karmic ladder. I figure it's either right at the bottom (they pretty much just float around all day, just kinda accepting whatever comes to them), or right at the top (they pretty much just float around all day, just kinda accepting whatever comes to them). Is there any chance that jellyfish are the physical manifestation of those who have achieved Nirvana?

But now I see that that's a pretty foolish notion. The dwellers of Nirvana are clearly Tardigrades. Which is a nice thought, because there's a lot of them.

Tardigrades...IN OUTER SPACE!

It's a new show (or should be, at least).

p.s. I hope that linked all right...

oh em gee, joel. i think you just introduced me to my new favorite creature. it's like you put a manatee, an armadillo, and a caterpillar in a pot until it cooked town to "adorably tiny".

i very much enjoy this animal series. i bet animals are great art practice...they have such strange faces and textures. i would love to see a joel priddy manatee, or spider-may, or tardigrade.

i imagine jellyfish are closer to the top, because they have a mechanism designed to cause you pain for messing with them, almost as if the universe is slapping you on the wrist for getting in their way.

Incredible little creatures aren't they? They're like tiny invincible Shrinky Dink manatees!

Tardigrades in spaaaaaaaaacccccccce! "This is ground control to Major Tom, you've really made the Tardigrade......and the papers want to know if they're still aliii-iiive!

Lotsa love for the tardigrades! And who would dare say they don't deserve every sticky-sweet droplet of it?

Hmm... Tardigrades in Space just might have to be a T-shirt.

I'm not giving you too much grief because I respect the notion that family comes first. That said, I sure would have liked to have been able to tell you how much I enjoy your work in person at SPX. Plus I could've picked up Beeswax Bound direct from the source instead of having to order it (and I was hoping a little Forbidden Sins panel might be along to boot). You did dodge the bullet of having to play gracious when I forced my first attempt at a mini comic on you in hopes of feedback.

Best wishes to you Skeezix and the LW.

Stephen,

Thanks for the nice comment! I'm sorry to have missed what is certainly my favorite show, and it would have been great to meet you and all my other blog buddies. Tell what: email me your address and I'll send you that Forbidden Sins panel. And I'd be delighted to look at your minicomic!
